Staff writer, with CNA

Taiwanese mobile phone makers will enjoy higher-than-average shipment growth next year thanks to new orders of low-end smartphones, a Taipei-based research firm forecast yesterday.

According to a report by Topology Research Institute (拓璞產業研究所), Taiwanese brands and contract makers will ship 94.5 million mobile phones next year, up 8.6 percent from the 87 million units estimated for this year.

Global mobile phone shipments are expected to reach 1.86 billion units next year, up 4.5 percent from 1.78 billion units this year, the report said.

The higher growth for Taiwanese mobile phone makers will come from increasing orders for low-end smartphones from international brands, such as Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc, Nokia Oyj and Lenovo Group Ltd (聯想), the report said.

Low-end smartphones refer to models priced below US$150, according to the researcher.

In its report, Topology also forecast rising shipments of notebook computers and LCD televisions by Taiwanese suppliers next year, but falling shipments of digital cameras.

Notebook computer shipments from Taiwanese companies will increase by 4.6 percent to 187.9 million units next year, higher than the 3.4 percent annual growth forecast for the global notebook industry, Topology said.

LCD television shipments from Taiwanese suppliers are expected to total 41.5 million units next year, a rise of 5 percent from 39.5 million units this year, the researcher said.

However, shipments by Taiwanese contract makers of digital cameras, will fall by 15.9 percent, the report said.
