Police and prosecutors are investigating ASMedia Technology Inc (祥碩) over a claim it was infringing VIA Technologies Inc’s (威盛) intellectual property, the two companies said yesterday.
ASMedia is an IC controller supplier and a subsidiary of PC vendor Asustek Computer Inc (華碩).
Computer chip designer VIA Technologies and its affiliated smartphone manufacturer HTC Corp (宏達電) are owned by Cher Wang (王雪紅).
ASMedia confirmed in a filing to the Taiwan Stock Exchange yesterday that investigators had searched the company’s headquarters in Sindian (新店), New Taipei City (新北市), on Thursday and seized a number of documents.
The search came after VIA filed complaints against ASMedia, claiming the latter’s USB 3.0 chips have infringed the copyrights of its physical layer (PHY) technologies, VIA, which is also headquartered in Sindian, said in a separate filing.
ASMedia, which currently trades on the smaller Emerging Stock Market, is planning to list on the Taiwan Stock Exchange by the end of this year.
ASMedia president Lin Che-wei (林哲偉) said earlier yesterday at a press briefing that the company was confident it could prove it did not violate VIA’s copyrights and would go ahead with its plan to list on the main bourse.
Established in 2004, ASMedia said the issue was not expected to have a significant impact on its finance and business.
Local media have reported that some of its employees worked for VIA before.
