Mstar Semiconductor Inc (晨星半導體), the world’s largest supplier of chips for flat screen TVs, said on Friday it expected to see sales growth for the third quarter because that was normally peak season.
With China’s subsidy program for TV purchases in place, TV chip sales on the huge China market are expected to rise accordingly, MStar Semiconductor chairman Wayne Liang (梁公偉) said.
In particular, buying can be expected to spike ahead of Oct. 1, China’s National Day, which will boost TV sales, Liang said at an annual general meeting in Hsinchu.
In addition to rising demand for TV chips, growth in shipments of chips used in cellphones and set-top boxes based on the peak season effects are expected to help push the company’s third quarter sales past the second quarter level, Liang said.
Last month, MStar forecast second quarter sales growth of 6 percent from the first quarter, to a range of between US$300 million and US$318 million.
Liang forecast that shipments of his company’s TV chips for this year would show annual growth of between 10 and 15 percent.
