Fubon Financial Holding Co (富邦金控) remained the most profitable financial holding firm in the nation last month, while Cathay Financial Holding Co (國泰金控) was the only institution to incur losses, company statistics released last week showed.

IN THE RED
Meanwhile, Cathay Financial Holding Co posted NT$1.08 billion in net losses, or NT$0.11 per share, as it assigned large reverses for its life insurance division — Cathay Life Insurance Co (國泰人壽) — sending the financial holding firm to the bottom of the earnings rankings.
However, United Cathay Commercial Bank (國泰世華銀行), a banking division of Cathay Financial, registered NT$1.15 billion in net profits.
Mega Financial Holding Co (兆豐金控) came in second after Fubon Financial, posting NT$1.87 billion in net profits, or NT$0.17 per share, due to gains from its overseas investments and the disposal of its holdings in Taiwan Mobile Co (台灣大哥大) and Chunghwa Telecom Co (中華電信).
Shin Kong Financial Holding Co (新光金控) was the third most-profitable earner last month, registering NT$1.35 billion in net profits, or NT$0.16 per share, on growth in securities and bond investment returns as the financial markets rebounded.

Stephen Garrett, a 27-year-old graduate student, always thought he would study in China, but first the country’s restrictive COVID-19 policies made it nearly impossible and now he has other concerns. The cost is one deterrent, but Garrett is more worried about restrictions on academic freedom and the personal risk of being stranded in China. He is not alone. Only about 700 American students are studying at Chinese universities, down from a peak of nearly 25,000 a decade ago, while there are nearly 300,000 Chinese students at US schools. Some young Americans are discouraged from investing their time in China by what they see

New apartments in Taiwan’s major cities are getting smaller, while old apartments are increasingly occupied by older people, many of whom live alone, government data showed. The phenomenon has to do with sharpening unaffordable property prices and an aging population, property brokers said. Apartments with one bedroom that are two years old or older have gained a noticeable presence in the nation’s six special municipalities as well as Hsinchu county and city in the past five years, Evertrust Rehouse Co (永慶房產集團) found, citing data from the government’s real-price transaction platform.
