Compal Electronics Inc (仁寶電腦), the world’s second-largest contract notebook PC maker, posted NT$54.29 billion (US$1.8 billion) in revenues last month, down 32 percent year-on-year and 1.42 percent month-on-month.
Total sales for the first three quarters declined 23 percent from the same period last year, to NT$498.44 billion, according to a company statement released yesterday.
Compal’s sales have slumped this year because its major client, Acer Inc (宏碁), placed fewer orders amid a corporate restructuring.
Consequently, Compal lowered its shipment target for notebooks to 42 million units from 48 million units for this year and cut its shipment target for tablet PCs to 3 million from 3.8 million.
Separately, the combined revenues of Pegatron Corp (和碩) and Unihan Corp (永碩) — two manufacturing arms of Asustek Computer Inc (華碩電腦) — were NT$53.78 billion last month, up 15.2 percent from a month earlier and 35 percent from the same period last year.
The expansion was attributed to double-digit revenue growth from communications and consumer electronics departments, while the computing department grew by low single digits, according to a statement.
Pegatron is reportedly assembling the iPhone 4S for Apple Inc.
For the first three quarters, the combined revenues from the two companies were NT$337.94 billion, up 6.1 percent year-on-year.
Asustek yesterday also posted unconsolidated sales of NT$31.23 billion for last month, down 6 percent from a month ago, but up 13 percent from last year.
Prior to yesterday’s sales data, Citigroup Global Markets analyst Kevin Chang (張凱偉) had expected Asustek’s fourth-quarter sales to drop as much as 5 percent.
As Acer finishes clearing its inventory in Europe and Lenovo acquires Acer’s European team, Asustek’s market share momentum in Europe might slow starting in the fourth quarter, Chang said in a note released on Oct. 4.
Stephen Garrett, a 27-year-old graduate student, always thought he would study in China, but first the country’s restrictive COVID-19 policies made it nearly impossible and now he has other concerns. The cost is one deterrent, but Garrett is more worried about restrictions on academic freedom and the personal risk of being stranded in China. He is not alone. Only about 700 American students are studying at Chinese universities, down from a peak of nearly 25,000 a decade ago, while there are nearly 300,000 Chinese students at US schools. Some young Americans are discouraged from investing their time in China by what they see

New apartments in Taiwan’s major cities are getting smaller, while old apartments are increasingly occupied by older people, many of whom live alone, government data showed. The phenomenon has to do with sharpening unaffordable property prices and an aging population, property brokers said. Apartments with one bedroom that are two years old or older have gained a noticeable presence in the nation’s six special municipalities as well as Hsinchu county and city in the past five years, Evertrust Rehouse Co (永慶房產集團) found, citing data from the government’s real-price transaction platform. In Taipei, apartments with one bedroom accounted for 19 percent of deals last
