Acer unveils new R&D center in Chongqing

By Jason Tan  /  Staff Reporter

Acer Inc yesterday inaugurated a new global research and development (R&D) center in Chongqing, China, to develop smart handheld devices, including smartphones and tablet PCs.

The center, Acer Intellectual (Chongqing) Co (宏碁智能), will cooperate with the Chongqing City Government and China Mobile Ltd (中國移動), the world’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, in R&D of smart handhelds, according to a statement.

Acer is investing US$4 million in the center, which will be led by Acer president Jim Wong (翁健仁).

Acer’s R&D team in China has successfully developed applications for Android-based TD-SCDMA smartphones.

Those applications are being used by Chongqing civil servants and Acer will work with the Chongqing government to develop smart handheld mobile terminals to provide more value-added services, the statement said.

In December last year, Acer announced it was setting up global notebook production at a separate plant in Chongqing. The manufacturing base commenced operations in May.

Separately, Acer said it had appointed Dave Chan (陳國維) as general manager of its touch business group in China. Chan was a vice president of Hewlett-Packard China for eight years, in charge of the PC division that includes the notebook and tablet PC businesses.
