Staff Writer, with CNA

The production value of the local communications sector is expected to exceed NT$1.5 trillion (US$52 billion) in 2013 on the back of expanding applications in communications technology, the National Science Council said on Saturday.

Nudged along by a five-year Network Communications Program that started in 2009, output of the domestic communications sector totaled about NT$1.11 trillion last year.

The program, which was initiated by the council and carried out jointly with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, aims to boost Taiwan’s strength in the global communications industry.

The council plans to spend US$77.6 million by the end of this year to carry out the program, compared with last year’s budget of US$73.9 million.
