Samsung Electronics Co aims to seize at least 30 percent of the nation’s mobile phone market this year, dethroning Nokia as Taiwan’s No. 1 cellphone brand, a Samsung executive said yesterday.
If Samsung is able to obtain this goal, it would help boost the revenues of the firm’s local unit by a double-digit percentage year-on-year, as the mobile phone market accounts for a large chunk of its overall revenues, the company said. However, Samsung declined to provide specific figures.
“Our ambition in 2011 is to become No. 1 in the mobile phone market,” Samsung Electronics Taiwan president Moon Sung-hyun said during a lunar year-end media gathering yesterday. “We will provide more products [to cater to every customer’s need].”
Moon did not provide details about the rollout of any additional new products.
With a 20 percent market share, Samsung ranked No. 2 in Taiwan’s mobile phone market last year.
Flat-panel TVs would be another pillar to support the company’s revenue growth this year, Moon said.
Samsung’s launch of its latest smart TVs that will offer applications in Chinese, allowing users to download from the Internet is scheduled for Taiwan in either March or April, Moon said.
Moon expected flat-screen TV revenues to grow by two fold this year.
In addition to it’s smart TVs, Samsung will launch more smartphones, including high-priced and affordable models, according to Andy Tu (杜偉昱), general manager of Samsung’s mobile communication team in Taipei.
More than 30 percent of its product line-up will be smartphones, mostly powered by Google Inc’s Android system this year, Tu said.
As a whole, revenues in the Taiwanese handset market are expected to grow this year as consumers will be more willing to spend more on electronic products on the back of continued economic growth in Taiwan, Tu said.
