Buyers placed substantial orders on the first day of the 35th Taipei International Electronic Show (TAITRONICS) on Thursday, an indication that the electronics industry is on the road to recovery, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA, 外貿協會) said yesterday.
On the opening day of the show that attracted more than 10,000 domestic and foreign buyers, US$150 million in orders were given to local suppliers in private face-to-face meetings, a TAITRA statement said.
The one-day total nearly matched the US$170 million in orders placed in three days of private meetings at last year’s show.
Customs statistics show that electronics has been one of the nation’s three fastest growing export sectors in recent months. Electronics shipments in August were US$550 million higher than in July.
August electronics shipments were still 32 percent lower than August last year, but the rate of decline was more than 10 percentage points lower than for July.
Jointly hosted by TAITRA and the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (台灣電子電機公會), the electronics show runs until tomorrow at the Taiwan World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall in Taipei.
Electronic components, manufacturing and testing equipment, LEDs and lighting, and safety and security products are among some of the items being highlighted at TAITRONICS this year.
The show features 850 Taiwanese exhibitors occupying 1,700 booths and about 100 Chinese vendors. TAITRA said it was expecting 5,000 buyers from abroad and 70,000 professionals from Taiwan to visit the show.
