Wu Chia-lu (吳家錄), Shin Kong Financial Holding Co (新光金控) vice chairman, has received the 10th International Dragon Award (IDA) for his lifetime achievements, the award organizer said yesterday.
“This is the first time in the award’s 10-year history that a lifetime achievement award was granted — in honor of Wu’s past contributions to the domestic life insurance sector,” Elaine Lin (林竹), the award’s public relations manager, said by telephone.
The award, which honors outstanding life insurance agents in the Asia-Pacific region, may continue to present the lifetime achievement award to executives of life insurers in the region, she said.
Wu, 82, began his life insurance career in 1949 and helped co-found Shin Kong Life Insurance Co (新光人壽) in 1963, serving as its president for 21 years.
After retiring in 1990, Wu donated his NT$10 million (US$304,952) pension to create a foundation, which has since grown into a NT$100 million fund, to help nurture the nation’s life insurance talents.
Receiving the award late on Thursday, Wu said that he considered his involvement in the establishment of both Shin Kong Life Insurance and the foundation his biggest achievements in life and vowed to make more contributions to the sector in his retirement.
Stephen Garrett, a 27-year-old graduate student, always thought he would study in China, but first the country’s restrictive COVID-19 policies made it nearly impossible and now he has other concerns. The cost is one deterrent, but Garrett is more worried about restrictions on academic freedom and the personal risk of being stranded in China. He is not alone. Only about 700 American students are studying at Chinese universities, down from a peak of nearly 25,000 a decade ago, while there are nearly 300,000 Chinese students at US schools. Some young Americans are discouraged from investing their time in China by what they see
