Hon Hai Group (鴻海集團), the nation’s largest electronics manufacturer, will spend NT$1.9 billion (US$ 58.04 million) to build a R&D center in the Kaohsiung Software Park (高雄軟體科學園區), the Central News Agency (CNA) reported yesterday.

The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for July, the report said, and more than 500 workers are expected to be hired for the center.

Hon Hai will use the inauguration to showcase its R&D efforts, including security monitoring and carbon emissions monitoring systems, the report said.

Hon Hai’s investment in southern Taiwan’s software industry will encourage other international companies and local industry leaders to follow suit, the report said.

The project was approved by the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Export Processing Zone (EPZ) Administration on April 30.

Hon Hai chairman Terry Gou (郭台銘) signed a letter of intent with Minister of Economic Affairs Yiin Chii-ming (尹啟銘) last June to invest in the park.

The EPZ Administration said Hon Hai’s investment would boost efforts to create a software industry cluster in southern Taiwan and enhance the competitiveness of software and environmental technology industries there.

As of the end of last month, the park administration had approved 89 investment applications. Forty-nine firms have completed the registration process, with total investment of more than NT$4 billion, the EPZ Administration said.
