With information technology (IT) firms around the world jumping on the cloud-computing bandwagon, Microsoft Corp said yesterday that CyberLink Corp (°T³s¬ì§Þ) would become its first Taiwanese ¡§global independent software vendor¡¨ (GISV).

Together, the two companies will engage in research and development (R&D) to develop ¡§a connected, enhanced, digital, multi-media experience for users worldwide through the creation of premium, killer applications to be released with the next-generation Windows operating system,¡¨ CyberLink CEO Alice Chang (±iµØºÕ) said at the Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) at Nangang Software Park in Taipei.

Microsoft has 200 GISV partners worldwide, including one in China ¡X CDC Software, a subsidiary of China¡¦s CDC Corp. Together they develop, market and deliver enterprise applications for client relationship management to customers in China.

These applications are designed on site and on demand via the ¡§software-as-a-service¡¨ model.

CyberLink is a leader in digital entertainment and multimedia solutions. The two partners share many major clients, such as Acer Inc (§»ùÖ), Lenovo Group Ltd (Áp·Q), Samsung Electronics Co, Siemens AG and Sony Corp. Recently, CyberLink collaborated with Hewlett-Packard Co (HP) to produce HP¡¦s Touch Smart PC series, which uses innovative touch-screen functionality.

¡§As Microsoft¡¦s GISV partner, we have three important missions. We want to open up dual communication channels with Microsoft to work on Window¡¦s next generation multimedia interface, capitalize and develop on the idea of cloud computing, and enhance our software operation and software management expertise,¡¨ Chang said.

The interaction between the two companies will be frequent and intense, featuring visits from multiple engineering experts from Microsoft¡¦s headquarters in Redmond, Washington, Microsoft Taiwan general manager Davis Tsai (½²®¦¥þ) said.

Ninety percent of CyberLink¡¦s sales and revenues come from overseas customers, meaning the multimedia house has sales and marketing teams all over the world, but not in Taiwan.

¡§But to keep the spirit of innovation in our beloved country, our company firmly believes in keeping our R&D department in Taiwan. We are delighted that our engineers will be trained here and we can continue to develop talents locally,¡¨ Chang stressed.
