CeBIT chooses ‘Webciety’ as next theme

CeBIT, the Hannover, Germany-based digital industry trade fair, has chosen “Webciety” as the theme for its next show, scheduled for March 3 to March 8 next year, the trade show organizer announced yesterday.

As more than 1.5 billion people are online, the theme of a “Webciety,” or the Internet society, reflects the fact that the Internet has become an essential part of our everyday life, the organizer said.

“I expect the Webciety to become the main driving force in the future,” Sven Pruser, senior vice president of Deutsche Messe AG, the trade show’s organizer, said at a media briefing in Taipei yesterday.

Another highlight of next year’s CeBIT is TeleHealth, which will be extended to six full days for the first time, and divided into three sections: telemedicine, healthcare management and healthcare projects.

Forrester Research estimates that the global medical electronics market will grow 50-fold to US$33.6 billion by 2015.

When asked about the impact of the ongoing US financial crisis on the information communication technology (ICT) industry, Pruser said he expected investors to be a little nervous and critical next year, but that they have no choice and have to invest because business will go on.

China replaced Taiwan for the first time in the history of CeBIT as the largest foreign exhibitor last year.
