Philip Chen (陳尚群), president of Far Eastern Air Transport Co (FAT, 遠東航空), tendered his resignation yesterday after the debt-ridden carrier failed to pay its employees salaries for last month and bonuses for last year.
Alex Shih (施建華), deputy vice president of FAT's planning division, confirmed Chen's resignation during a telephone interview with the Taipei Times last night.
"FAT will pay its employees 80 percent of their salaries tomorrow [today], with the remainder to be paid within the next week or two," Shih said.
Shih said that the selection of a new candidate would be discussed at the board meeting on April 11.
The FAT workers union is expected to hold a meeting next Friday to address job security and other concerns. Union head Chen Kuo-liang (陳國良) said the union may also discuss whether to hold a strike if FAT failed to address their concerns.
