Lenovo launches thinnest, lightest notebook to date

Following Apple's release of its ultra-thin 13.3-inch MacBook Air laptop in January, competition in the compact laptop market has stiffened.

Joining the battle, Lenovo Group Ltd (聯想) launched its new 13.3-inch screen ThinkPad X300 yesterday, which, at 1.33kg, it claims is the thinnest and lightest full-function laptop of its kind.

"Lenovo's ThinkPad X300 is specially tailored for the nation's high-end business users, who in our latest survey expressed a need for a thinner and lighter laptop," Ken Wong (黃建燴), general manager of Lenovo Hong Kong and Taiwan, said at a press conference.

Lenovo's ThinkPad X300, priced at NT$119,000 (US$3,800), incorporates new features including a solid-state drive (SSD) and light-emitting diode (LED) backlight display, which are not available in the other ThinkPad series.

"This is Lenovo's first ThinkPad series that comes equipped with a 64 gigabyte SSD, which makes it three times faster than conventional hard drives," Nolan Lee (李宗幸), product marketing manager at Lenovo Taiwan, said yesterday.

"The LED backlight feature also helps reduce power consumption," Lee said.

Compared to Apple's MacBook Air, which is 19cm wide and 4cm thin, the ThinkPad X300 is only 1.86cm thin.

"What differentiates Lenovo's ThinkPad from Apple's MacBook Air is that Lenovo did not sacrifice the full functionality of its laptops while aiming for thinner and lighter models," Wesper Yang (楊財發), Lenovo advisory IT specialist for technical sales support, said yesterday.
