Intel Corp, the world's largest chipmaker, said it was set to close a unit near Kuala Lumpur by the middle of this year to cut expenses.
"As with any other company, we look for ways to minimize costs and optimize our resources," Atul Bhargava, managing director of Intel's Malaysian unit, said in an interview in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
Most Intel employees at Cyberjaya have been offered jobs at other offices in Malaysia, Bhargava said, declining to specify how many positions could be cut.
The division at Cyberjaya, which designs software and provides customer support, houses about 200 employees, according to Intel's Web site.
The California-based company last month forecast sales for the first quarter that missed analysts' estimates, stoking concern the industry is being hurt by slowing economic growth.
Intel has started relocating employees from Cyberjaya to offices in Kulim, in the northern state of Kedah, and Penang, in the northwest, Bhargava said.
