    McDonald's launches home deliveries

    By Jackie Lin

McDonald's announced it can now deliver orders to your doorstep, rain or shine, without restrictions on the size of the order.

But the new service includes a surcharge of NT$70 (US$2.10) to cover the delivery costs, said Steven Lee (李明元), chief executive of McDonald's Restaurants (Taiwan) Co, on the sidelines of a press conference yesterday.

Following two years of research and development, and an investment of over NT$100 million, the delivery service will be launched in the greater Taipei area, with the firm expecting to employ 1,000 delivery personnel.

It has also set up a call center staffed by 100 to guarantee that meals will be delivered within 30 minutes.

The service will be extended to other major urban areas, including Taichung and Kaohsiung, starting next year, he said.

"Pursuing a simple life has been a global trend. We've conducted a trial run on the delivery service for sometime and consumer response showed that the service is necessary," Lee said.

By integrating experiences gained in Brazil, Egypt and Singapore, Lee believes the new service can boost revenues by 10 percent.

Since 2004, McDonald's has seen sales grow in all of its outlets, with a cumulative revenue growth of more than 20 percent, Lee said.

Currently McDonald's has 349 stores nationwide, including over 150 locations that open 24 hours.
