Exquisite Optical Technology Co (今湛光學科技), a local optical component maker, said it was suing a second handset giant in an alleged camera module patent infringement case.
The maker filed a lawsuit against Motorola Inc's Taiwan branch on Tuesday, requesting compensation of US$150 million as well as the withdrawal of Motorola's RAZR phones in Taiwan, Exquisite Optical president Lens Chen (
The maker claimed that the popular RAZR series had infringed a camera module patent it owns.
Chen said Motorola had sold 75 million RAZR phones through the end of last year and that 75 million counterfeit RAZR phones were also sold in China using components possibly leaked from Motorola's suppliers.
Exquisite Optical is requesting a US$1 compensation for each phone sold, he added.
Motorola Taiwan said it had brought the case to the attention of its US headquarters, adding that the local branch was only selling and not producing the phones.
The lawsuit followed similar litigation last month, in which Exquisite Optical sued the local branch of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications Ltd on a possible infringement of an auto focus lens used in the K750i phone.
The company produces optical mirror slices, lens and IC substrates, cellphones and telescopes.
