Ministry launches office to negotiate economic interests

The Ministry of Economic Affairs announced yesterday that it would inaugurate an economics and commerce negotiations representative office tomorrow as the major body in charge of the nation's bilateral and multilateral trade negotiations, including with the WTO and concerning international free trade agreements.

The structure of the "Office of Trade Negotiations, MOEA" includes a chief negotiations representative, two deputy representatives, three senior negotiators and other officials, the ministry said. The office opens on Monday.

Trade negotiations are currently assigned to different departments, which is no longer effective, the ministry said.

Separately, the ministry will expand the scale of its nanoproduct certification system, issuing "nano marks" to five more item categories in addition to the current eight, officials of the ministry's Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) said yesterday.

The IDB started the system with eight categories, including anti-germ photocatalyst lighting, anti-germ photocatalyst ceramic tiles, stain-free photocatalyst ceramic tiles, photocatalyst paint with deodorizing capability, photocatalyst paint with stain removing capability, stain-free ceramic sanitary products, attrition-proof polyurethane (PU) synthetic leather and attrition-proof PU resin for synthetic leather.

IDB officials said that to invigorate consumer confidence in local products, the ministry approved the expansion of the system to include air-cleaning photocatalyst lighting, photocatalyst filters, photocatalyst air-cleaners, nano silver textiles and grease-proof kitchen range hoods.
