Taiwan will probably need more than 100,000 new employees in six major high-tech sectors over the next three years, the Cabinet's Science and Technology Advisory Group predicted yesterday.
The six sectors refer to semiconductor, image display, digital content, biotechnology, telecommunications and information service, which will need 107,000 new workers over the next three years, including 35,800 in the IC sector and 19,500 in digital content.
The group made the prediction in a meeting with the Industrial Technology Research Institute of Taiwan, the Institute for Information Industry and the Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB) to review the supply and demand for high-tech personal through 2009.
They said the outlook for Taiwan's industry will continue to grow in this period.
They also predicted there could be a shortage of personnel in the high-tech section because universities will only produce about 101,000 graduates by 2009.
By contrast, the manpower supply in the biotechnology industry in the same three-year period was expected to exceed demand, with 8,810 people competing for 3,105 positions, said Chen Li-min (
Chen said basic research will account for the lion's share of manpower needs in the biotech sector, and personnel will need to upgrade their professional skills to stay competitive.
