    ■ High-speed rail
    Local drivers to start soon
The first group of 12 local bullet train drivers will join the service in May, as the number of round trips on the railway will be increased by the middle of this year, a Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp (THSRC, 台灣高鐵) spokesman said yesterday. The THSRC has 37 foreign drivers and is to add six more later this month, the spokesman said, adding that it had also recruited 62 local drivers for intensive training.

    ■ Music
    EMI rejects Warner bid
EMI Group PLC said on Friday it had rejected a nonbinding £2.1 billion (US$4.1 billion) takeover proposal from Warner Music Group. EMI said that the £2.60 (US$5.06) per share offer was inadequate based on the standalone value of EMI and the synergies available from a combination with Warner. The company said the offer would lead to "prolonged regulatory uncertainty and unacceptable operational risk at a critical time for the company."

    ■ Insider trading
    Regulators probe TXU Corp
US Federal regulators charged on Friday that unknown investors pocketed more than US$5.3 million in illegal profits from insider trading before TXU Corp announced it had agreed to be sold for US$32 billion. The Securities and Exchange Commission's lawyers filed a lawsuit in federal district court in Chicago seeking restitution and civil fines against unknown defendants who bought options on TXU shares last week.
