Eighty-seven percent of Internet users in Taiwan own financial investments, most of which are savings accounts, according to the results of a survey released yesterday by a local market research company.

The survey, conducted by InsightXplorer (創市際), shows that 66 percent of respondents have New Taiwan dollar savings accounts, 56.8 percent have insurance, 55.2 percent own credit cards and 29.4 percent own stock.

Among those who purchased financial investments online over the past month, 15.4 percent bought stocks, 12.3 percent bought mutual funds and 6.2 percent bought insurance.

The survey found that 46 percent of stock investors had carried out stock transactions online over the past month and that online financial services were more popular among men than women.

The survey found that 49.2 percent of respondents had financial planning, with 14.3 percent paying close attention to information about financial management. Those who do not have any financial planning accounted for only 19.7 percent.

Over the past month, 34 percent of the respondents had used online banking services and 32.6 percent had used an online ATM. As many as 92.4 percent of the online banking service users said they were satisfied with the services.

The services most commonly used included checking one's savings account balance (79.5 percent), transferring funds or paying bills (63 percent) and checking credit card balance (58.8 percent).

Among the respondents who had never used online banking services, 58.3 percent said they were concerned about privacy issues, while 37.1 percent said they were more used to conducting banking transactions at banks in person.

The survey was conducted from Dec. 6-8 last year among 2,160 Internet users around Taiwan.
