Lotto union seeking compensation

By Jackie Lin  /  STAFF REPORTER

Plagued by a series of computer breakdowns since the new lottery system went online on Monday, the lotto union will seek compensation and ask the lotto operator to launch additional promotions to boost flagging sales.

There were only sporadic reports of lotto computers crashing yesterday.

Even so, agencies have seen business drop by more than 50 percent as consumer confidence in the Taiwan Lottery Co's (台灣彩券公司) ticketing system plummets, said Lin Chun-fu (林俊福), secretary general of the union, which represents around 4,700 lotto agencies.

"In the past [when lotto tickets were issued by Taipei Fubon Bank (台北富邦銀行)] the worst days would still see more than NT$200 million (US$6.13 million) in tickets sold. But now the figure has dropped to only NT$70 million," he said.

Lin and other representatives yesterday met with Tsai Ching-nain (蔡慶年), director-general of the Ministry of Finance's National Treasury Agency, to voice their concerns.

The ministry, which oversees lotto operations, will arrange another meeting on Tuesday for lotto delegates and Taiwan Lottery.

Lin said they would ask for compensation from the company because the distributors -- mostly underprivileged people -- have carried a heavy financial burden.

"We're all ready to do business, but apparently they are not," he said.

They will also ask Taiwan Lottery to completely shut down business for a couple of days in order to troubleshoot the firm's systems and so deter a long period of unstable operations, he said.

In addition, Lin said they would suggest that the company raise the stakes as part of a promotional package to boost sales.
