ProMOS rebuts report on chip site

BLOOMBERG

ProMOS Technologies Inc (茂德科技), the nation's third-largest maker of computer memory chips, said it hasn't yet picked a site for its planned semiconductor plant in China, denying a newspaper report that it has already formed a venture.

"We'll make a decision after gaining final government approval," ProMOS vice president Jessie Peng (彭卓蘭) said yesterday.

The Chinese-language Economic Daily News reported that ProMOS will build a chip plant in Chongqing in China's Sichuan Province, with the local government investing US$200 million.

Construction may begin next year and be completed within 18 months, the newspaper said.

The Hsinchu-based company is awaiting permission from the Investment Commission for a US$365 million investment project in China.

ProMOS plans to use the facility to make chips used in consumer electronics such as mobile phones, Peng said.

The commission is expected to review the investment applications submitted by ProMOS, Powerchip Semiconductor Corp (力晶半導體) and Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc (日月光半導體) today, as these technology companies are seeking to build production lines in China to be closer to customers.

The ministry last week gave preliminary approval to these firms' China-bound investment applications.
