Jobless rate edges down

The jobless rate fell slightly last month partly because of a drop in first-time job seekers, the government said yesterday.

The jobless rate reached 3.86 percent last month, compared with 3.9 percent in October, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said.

The number of unemployed fell to 410,000 last month from 413,000 in October, the DGBAS said, adding that there was a decline of 11,000 jobless people among first-time job seekers last month.

The unemployment rate in the first 11 months of the year -- 3.91 percent -- was the lowest for that period in six years, according to government data.

The unemployment rate for the January-November period in 2000 was 2.97 percent.

"The labor market is continuing to grow steadily and the full-year unemployment rate will likely be below 4 percent," said Huang Jiann-jong (黃建中), deputy director of the Bureau of Census.

The rate averaged 4.13 percent last year.
