    Shares dip on profit-taking
Shares closed 0.14 percent lower yesterday as late profit-taking wiped out early gains made on Wall Street's overnight rebound, dealers said.
The TAIEX lost 9.46 points to end at 6,901.75 on turnover of NT$64.40 billion (US$1.96 billion).
Decliners outnumbered gainers 662 to 408, with 170 stocks remaining unchanged.
Yageo Corp (國巨) closed down NT$0.05 at NT$11.90, although it said that a fire at its Tashe (大社) plant in Kaohsiung last night would not greatly impact its business.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (台積電) rose NT$0.80 to NT$60.50, but rival United Microelectronics Corp (聯電) dropped NT$0.05 to NT$18.55.

    Chunghwa shares to be sold
The government expects to sell shares in Chunghwa Telecom Co (中華電信) in the domestic market this week at a discount of "more than 4 percent" to attract investors, Chou Hui-mei (周惠美), an official at the National Treasury Agency, said yesterday.
Last week, Deputy Minister of Finance Liu Teng-cheng (劉燈城) said the telecommunications operator would sell 505.39 million shares in the form of American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) overseas and 120 million shares to domestic investors. Together, theses shares represent 7 percent of Chunghwa Telecom's stock.

    New Taiwan dollar declines
The New Taiwan dollar lost ground against its US counterpart, declining NT$0.001 to close at NT$32.940 on the Taipei foreign exchange market.
