Ministry urges environmental action

CNA , TAIPEI

The Ministry of Economic Affairs has adopted various measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which include guiding the industrial sector to employ the latest technology for new investment projects, Minister of Economic Affairs Steve Chen (陳瑞隆) said yesterday.

The ministry is also encouraging the industrial sector to replace ageing facilities to enhance energy efficiency, he said.

Chen made the remarks at an international conference held by state-run Taiwan Power Co (Taipower, 台電) on the power industry's strategies and technologies for coping with global warming.

Although Taiwan has not been able to sign any international conventions on environmental protection or take part in international environmental organizations, the country has not stopped its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Chen said.

In June, the ministry set up an office to promote the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The measures adopted included encouragement for the industrial sector to conserve energy and develop renewable energy, he said.

By recycling industrial waste and creating a "green supply chain," the country has reduced emissions of carbon dioxide by at least 30 million tonnes, Chen said.

The Cabinet has finalized a draft law on reducing greenhouse gas emissions that will soon be submitted to the legislature for review, he said.
