The 22nd Taipei International Auto/ Motorcycle Parts and Accessories Show -- Taipei AMPA -- organized by the semi-official Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and the Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufac-turers' Association, opened yesterday at the Taipei World Trade Center.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Economic Affairs Morgan Hwang (黃營杉) said the nation has made impressive achievements in exports of automotive and motorcycle parts and accessories, although exports of assembled cars still require further promotion efforts.

Saying that the country has around 200 tier-1 suppliers, Hwang added that exports of locally made cars and motorcycles reached NT$150 billion (US$4.71 billion), with parts and accessories accounting for 85 percent of the total.

Hwang encouraged local auto and motorcycle manufacturers to continue to step up innovation and development projects in order to make true the slogan "without Taiwan, you don't get parts."

According to statistics released by the organizers, a total of 2,243 booths have been set up by 934 domestic as well as overseas manufacturers from countries including the US, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, India and Singapore to display their latest products during the show that will run through Monday.

This year's exhibition also marks the first time that Chinese manufacturers are taking part in the Taipei AMPA, the organizers said, adding that a 65-strong Chinese delegation has set up 70 stands.

Highlights at the exhibition this year include a variety of high-technology products, such as global positioning systems, light emitting diode tail lights, wireless tire pressure monitoring systems, automatic sensor wiper blades, as well as popular automotive electronics products such as liquid-crystal-display televisions and MP3 players.

Taipei AMPA -- the largest auto/motorcycle parts and accessories show in Asia -- is expected to attract over 3,500 visitors from South Korea, France, the US, the UK, Spain, Australia and South Africa.
