Chunghwa Telecom would attempt to convince the regulator that it offered innovative services based on new technologies, which should help it keep the Internet TV business, Chang said.
The telecom law makes provision for the NCC to allow companies providing innovative services, or developing new technologies, exemption from the existing rules, he said.
"We won't give up on the broadband TV business easily," Chang said.
Analysts, too, are bullish about Chunghwa Telecom's chances.
"Chunghwa's small, money-losing Internet TV division seems a burden now, but it might turn out to be a cash cow for the firm in the future," Lu said.
