A computer virus named "WORM_APRIFUL.A" is being propagated through e-mails on the eve of April Fool's Day, the antivirus software provider TrendMicro Inc (趨勢科技) warned yesterday.
The Windows system will be infected if recipients open an attachment disguised as a game or joke, and when executed, the worm will display a message box reading: "I'm sorry to trouble you, but it's useless to say sorry. Happy April Fools' Day," the company said.
Although the worm will not damage the infected computer system, it will gather e-mail addresses from the Windows Address Book of the infected system and mail itself to these addresses, according to TrendMicro.
The company said while mischief-making viruses usually appear around April Fool's Day, there were also a number of prank mails being circulated over the Internet, such as mail claiming that its recipients had won a lottery and mail claiming to raise funds for tsunami or hurricane victims.
