The quasi-official Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA, 外貿協會) announced yesterday that it has launched an online system dubbed AgExporter that will be a platform for transactions between foreign buyers and Taiwanese agricultural product suppliers.

The Web site -- www.agexporter.com.tw -- was designed in Chinese, English and Japanese to help promote locally produced agricultural goods in the run-up to the 2006 International Food and Beverage Exhibition scheduled for next Tuesday through Friday in Tokyo, according to a TAITRA official.

The site covers 12 categories and more than 1,000 items of agricultural produce, including fresh vegetables and fruit, rice and related products, flowers, poultry and livestock products. Seafood, frozen foods, tea and other beverages are also included, the official said.

The official pointed out that foreign buyers can take advantage of the Japanese and English versions of the Web site to browse information on Taiwan's agricultural goods and locate interested suppliers.

A Taiwanese delegation, jointly organized by TAITRA and the Council of Agriculture will take part in the four-day Tokyo food and beverage fair to explore trade opportunities with Japan and other countries.

According to the official, the delegation to Foodex Japan, which is the largest food fair of its kind in Asia and the world's third-largest, consists of 57 prominent dealers in agricultural products.

The council is planning to set up a Taiwan pavilion with an area of 1,200m2, the largest to be built for Taiwanese exhibitors in recent years, in the hope that Taiwan-made products will stand out from those of other countries and attract more buyers, the official said.

The official said that the pavilion will be divided into six zones for the exhibition of a wide variety of premium farm produce, such as fresh vegetables and fruit, tea, seafood, rice, poultry and livestock products and processed foods, as well as candy and biscuits.

Japan is Taiwan's largest agricultural export market, according to the council.

Taiwan exported nearly US$1.3 billion in agricultural products there last year, accounting for 36 percent of the nation's total amount of agricultural exports.
