The Cabinet announced yesterday that it will host a conference to discuss sustainable growth in May or June in order to reach consensus on solutions for the nation's economic problems.
Representatives from both the governing and opposition parties will be invited to participate in the meeting, in addition to economic experts and officials, Vice Premier Tsai Ing-wen (
"Ever since the beginning of this year, everybody has only cared about the `active management, effective opening' policy. However, this policy won't last forever. We shall think about more questions and problems we might have now that we are gradually globalizing," Tsai said.
The vice premier said that three main topics -- the development of social security, increasing economic competition and future international and cross-strait trade -- will be discussed at the conference.
"This conference is designed to be a brainstorming meeting, and the conclusions from the meeting will become critical when the government is deciding on future policies that concern the economy," Tsai said.
She added that no date had been set for the conference.
Tsai called for cooperation and support from the opposition parties and the legislature.
"We do need their voices on certain issues, such as direct flights and the three links," she said.
