Companies to offer more auto products at CeBIT

With the latest technology products on hand, Taiwanese exhibitors will again be a dominant presence at this year's CeBIT, the world's largest information and communication technology trade fair.

The fair opens next Thursday in Hannover, Germany.

"In addition to the popularity of consumer electronics, local exhibitors are also giving more prevalence to automobile components at this year's show," Paddy Chia (賈東屏), general manager of Hannover Pacific Corp, told the Taipei Times yesterday.

Hannover Pacific is a local representative of the firm that organizes CeBIT, Deutsche Messe AG.

Automobile components will be a hot topic at the expo, as one section has been dedicated to the segment this year, she said.

Fifty local companies have signed up for the auto component section, up from around 30 last year, according to Chia.

These firms include Mitac International Corp (神達) and E-Lead Electronic Co Ltd (怡利電子), among others.

In total, 711 vendors registered for the exposition are from Taiwan, accounting for 21.5 percent of the 3,305 overseas exhibitors, according to the latest figures from Hannover Pacific.

The number is a slight decline from last year's 775.

"In the past, companies such as Teco Electric & Machinery Co (東元電機) took part in the expo, along with their various business entities, but this year many decided to participate as a single group, to showcase all products under one roof," she said, in reference to the decline in the number of participants.

Consumer electronics such as liquid-crystal-display (LCD) TVs, DVD players, handsets, digital cameras and computers, will continue to take the center stage among products offered by Taiwanese companies.

Major local firms promoting consumer products include BenQ Corp (明基), Asustek Computer Inc (華碩), Micro-Star International Co (微星科技), Foxconn International Holdings (富士康), Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp (奇美電子) as well as Tatung Co (大同).

BenQ will have the biggest booth among local exhibitors, occupying 2,200m2 of floor space, followed by Micro-Star and Foxconn at around 400m2 each.

BenQ plans to introduce notebook computers, LCD monitors and TVs, as well as several mobile phones bearing the "BenQ-Siemens" logo for the first time. BenQ acquired the German firm's handset division last year.

Micro-Star will feature its latest range of motherboards, graphic cards, Bluetooth speakers as well as dual-core laptops.

CeBIT, which runs until March 15, will attract 6,262 companies across the globe, a slight increase from last year's 6,246 participants, according to Chia.

China, which overtook the US to become the second largest exhibitor from abroad in 2004, will cement its No. 2 position this year with 412 vendors.

South Korea comes in third with 229 vendors, followed by the US at 198 and the UK at 189.

The annual exhibition's themes range from business software solutions and home networking, to Internet telephony and downloaded music.
