Production will resume in fire-damaged factory: CMC

By Jason Tan  /  STAFF REPORTER , WITH BLOOMBERG

CMC Magnetics Corp (中環), the world's biggest maker of recordable discs used in DVD players, said production at part of its northern factory, which was damaged by fire yesterday, will resume as soon as the electricity supply is restored.

One female worker was killed in the fire, according to a TV news report.

The company is still accessing the extent of damage and is not sure about the exact restart schedule, said Ellen Lu (呂佩倫), CMC's associate supervisor of public relations.

But CMC said the factory, machinery and goods are completely covered by insurance, according to a filing it made to the Taiwan Stock Exchange late yesterday.

The company's plant in Yangmei Township (楊梅), Taoyuan County, was hit by a blaze at around 4am yesterday.

More than 100 employees were working at the plant when the fire started, and they were evacuated immediately.

One female worker died in the fire, which was put out at around 9am, local cable TV station USTV reported.

The factory produces 9 million recordable discs a month, according to Lu.

She declined to say how much the Yangmei facility contributed to the company's total production.

Monthly global demand for recordable discs is about 800 million to 1 billion units, she added.

"All our goods, equipment and the Yangmei factory were 100 percent insured, and the insurance company will handle compensation matters," Lu said.

Set up in 1999, the Yangmei plant occupies more than 3,000 ping (9,900m2).

It is considered a smaller-scale facility compared with other plants.

CMC has eight plants in Taiwan as well as facilities in Hong Kong, Mexico and China, Lu said.

CMC shares declined 0.95 percent yesterday, closing at NT$10.4.
