Miramar Cinemas splits from Warner Village Cinemas Co

By Jackie Lin  /  STAFF REPORTER

After a change of management in March last year, Taiwan's biggest cinema chain, Warner Village Cinemas Co (華納威秀), saw one of its two franchises split up to pursue independent operations.

The franchise, which is situated in the Miramar Entertainment Park (美麗華百樂園) in Taipei, will formally change its name to Miramar Cinemas (美麗華影城) starting tomorrow.

Reduction

This will reduce the number of Warner Village operations from nine to eight nationwide.

"As the management contract with Warner Village expires on Feb. 28 [today], we have decided to walk our own path and offer more sophisticated services," said Huang Chih-jie (黃世杰), chairman of Miramar Cinemas, which has a total of nine screens and one IMAX 3D movie theater, during a press briefing yesterday.

Miramar Cinemas plans to cooperate with retailers, such as convenience stores, to facilitate additional ticketing options and initiate a club member system to strengthen moviegoers' loyalty, the chairman said.

Undecided

The other Warner Village franchise, in Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store (新光三越) in Taipei's Tienmu district, remains undecided on whether to follow Miramar Cinemas lead or stay with the multinational, an official said on condition of anonymity.

Taiwan's Warner Village was acquired by Golden Harvest Entertainment (Holdings) Co (嘉禾) in which Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing (李嘉誠) has the largest stake.
