"Companies such as Intel Corp will be aggressively pushing new technologies this year, which will help create replacement demand and boost volume in the local market," Sunny Han (
Last month, Intel launched its Napa platform, which uses two processing cores on a single chip to boost notebook performance. Microsoft Corp is also expected to introduce its new Windows operating system, dubbed "Vista," in the second half of the year.
These new platforms will serve as a catalyst to raise the nation's total shipment of portable computers to as much as 900,000 units, up from 746,000 units last year, according to Han.
Asustek shipped a total of 254,000 units in the local market last year, reporting 48 percent growth over the previous year.
2006 shipments
The company aims to maintain its leadership this year by exceeding last year's shipments and estimates that this year's will reach around 370,000 notebooks, Han said.
In terms of global markets, Asustek, the world's largest motherboard maker, aims to ship 3 million units of own-brand notebooks, compared with 1.8 million units last year, he added.
Notebook leaders
According to preliminary results from technology research house International Data Corp, Asustek was the top notebook maker in Taiwan last year with a 34 percent market share, partly attributed to its leadership in quarterly shipments, which reached 91,000 units in the final three months of last year.
Acer Inc was the runner up with 216,000 units sold, or a 29 percent market share.
Hewlett-Packard Co trailed in third place, with 71,000 units sold and a 9.6 percent market share, while Lenovo Group Ltd (
Toshiba Corp was in the fifth spot, at 30,000 units sold, accounting for 4.1 percent of the market.
Eyeing the positive outlook for the first quarter, Asustek is betting on the Taipei Multimedia Computer Show, which will open tomorrow at the Taipei World Trade Center Hall I and runs through Sunday.
The company will promote its W5F laptop at the show. It claims the W5F is the industry's first Napa-based notebook coming in with a 12-inch screen.
"Compared with other Napa notebooks, with screens of 14 or 15 inches, our W5F overcame technical difficulties by putting dual cores in a more compact form factor, offering users greater mobility," Asustek's sales director Kevin Lin (
Among the rows of vibrators, rubber torsos and leather harnesses at a Chinese sex toys exhibition in Shanghai this weekend, the beginnings of an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven shift in the industry quietly pulsed. China manufactures about 70 percent of the world’s sex toys, most of it the “hardware” on display at the fair — whether that be technicolor tentacled dildos or hyper-realistic personalized silicone dolls. Yet smart toys have been rising in popularity for some time. Many major European and US brands already offer tech-enhanced products that can enable long-distance love, monitor well-being and even bring people one step closer to
Malaysia’s leader yesterday announced plans to build a massive semiconductor design park, aiming to boost the Southeast Asian nation’s role in the global chip industry. A prominent player in the semiconductor industry for decades, Malaysia accounts for an estimated 13 percent of global back-end manufacturing, according to German tech giant Bosch. Now it wants to go beyond production and emerge as a chip design powerhouse too, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said. “I am pleased to announce the largest IC (integrated circuit) Design Park in Southeast Asia, that will house world-class anchor tenants and collaborate with global companies such as Arm [Holdings PLC],”
Sales in the retail, and food and beverage sectors last month continued to rise, increasing 0.7 percent and 13.6 percent respectively from a year earlier, setting record highs for the month of March, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said yesterday. Sales in the wholesale sector also grew last month by 4.6 annually, mainly due to the business opportunities for emerging applications related to artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing technologies, the ministry said in a report. The ministry forecast that retail, and food and beverage sales this month would retain their growth momentum as the former would benefit from Tomb Sweeping Day
Thousands of parents in Singapore are furious after a Cordlife Group Ltd (康盛人生集團), a major operator of cord blood banks in Asia, irreparably damaged their children’s samples through improper handling, with some now pursuing legal action. The ongoing case, one of the worst to hit the largely untested industry, has renewed concerns over companies marketing themselves to anxious parents with mostly unproven assurances. This has implications across the region, given Cordlife’s operations in Hong Kong, Macau, Indonesia, the Philippines and India. The parents paid for years to have their infants’ cord blood stored, with the understanding that the stem cells they contained
