    MTC exceeds expectations

    By Jason Tan

The output value of Taiwan's Microsoft Technology Center (MTC) has exceeded the company's targets thanks to a greater than expected number of participating partners and projects, a Microsoft Corp executive said yesterday.

To date, MTC has helped its local software partners churn out output value amounting to nearly NT$3 billion (US$92.59 million), which is not far short of its initial three-year target of NT$4 billion, said Alexander Huang (¶À¦s¸q), company director for the Greater China region.

"We are confident of achieving our target output value within the set timeframe and might consider pumping in more investment," he told reporters at a media gathering.

Launched in June 2003 with a three-year investment of NT$550 million, MTC works with local software companies to develop new software solutions under Microsoft's .NET architecture.

In the past seven months alone, MTC created output value of NT$1.05 billion, according to Microsoft Taiwan.

One of the center's noteworthy projects was a collaboration with the Institute for the Information Industry (¸êµ¦·|) on an agricultural production profiling system, according to Huang.

Introduced last December, this system applies radio-frequency identification tagging technology to the seafood production process and supply chain. This information can then be printed on labels to inform consumers of the origins of the products they are looking at.

Huang also spoke briefly about plans to set up another center to help local software developers market their applications globally.
