The credit balance of credit card services provided by local banks amounted to NT$453.9 billion (US$13.59 billion) at the end of October, accounting for 7 percent of the total consumer loan balance, according to a report released on Tuesday by the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS).
The figure compared with NT$425 billion at the end of last year and NT$186.3 billion at the end of 2000.
The balance of consumer loans provided by local banks totaled NT$6.49 trillion at the end of October, up 10.7 percent from the NT$5.86 trillion posted at the end of last year.
The consumer loans include housing loans, loans for home renovation, credit cards, workers' welfare loans and car loans.
Housing loans increased from NT$2.65 trillion at the end of 2000 to NT$3.87 trillion at the end of October, accounting for 59.6 percent of consumer loans.
Loans for home renovation totaled NT$716.2 billion, accounting for 11 percent of consumer loans.
Welfare loans granted to workers amounted to NT$162.2 billion, making up 2.5 percent of consumer loans.
Car loans increased from NT$109.5 billion at the end of last year to NT$138.2 billion at the end of October, which accounted for 2.1 percent of consumer loans.
