Digital content sector to grow fast: report

The prospects for the digital-content industry are promising, with its global output having seen an average annual growth rate of 28.3 percent over the past five years, according to a report released yesterday by the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD).

Citing a survey by the Institute for Information Industry (III), the report said that the global output of the digital-content industry has expanded from US$61 billion in 2001 to US$165.5 billion this year.

The outlook for digital games, digital learning and mobile application services is especially rosy.

The digital-content industry refers to products or services involving the digitization, integration and application of graphics, text, images or vocal data using information technology.

In Taiwan, the total production value of the digital-content industry amounted to NT$133.4 billion (US$3.97 billion) in 2001, and counting approximately 1,500 manufacturers and 30,000 workers, the report said.

The figure jumped to NT$230 billion last year at an average growth rate of 19.9 percent per year, and the government is targeting to increase the output to NT$370 billion by next year.

Also, the Cabinet's Development Fund will funnel NT$10 billion from this year to 2010 to boost the industry, it said.

In the first three quarters of this year, the government has helped seal 31 international cooperation projects valued at NT$1.7 billion.
