The world's largest supplier of made-to-order chips, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC,
TSMC's September revenue rose 8.9 percent from the NT$23.17 billion reported for the same month last year. Compared with August, TSMC's revenue was up 8.8 percent, the company said.
Sales in the nine months to last month fell to US$183.43 billion from US$192.12 billion last year, the company added.
"Due to continued demand recovery from our customers, wafer shipments for September 2005 increased over August 2005," TSMC Chief Financial Officer Lora Ho (何麗梅) said in a statement.
On July 26, TSMC said wafer shipments are expected to increase by mid-teen percentage points, or 14-16 percent, in the third quarter to last month from the second, while gross margin is seen rising to 41-43 percent from 39.70 percent in the second. By comparison, rival United Microelectronics Corp (UMC, 聯電) reported a smaller year-on-year drop in revenue for the month, continuing the recovery from a sharp fall in July.
UMC's September revenue totaled NT$8.50 billion, down 28 percent from NT$11.86 billion in the same month last year, the company said. Its revenue has continued to recover from a 36.9 percent slump in July, the worst so far this year. Sales this year until last month fell to US$63.31 billion from US$89.08 billion previously, the company said.
