A talent-recruiting fair held in Los Angeles by a Taiwanese delegation on Saturday attracted around 500 young applicants, Cabinet-level National Science Council deputy chairman Liao Chun-chen (¹ù«T¦Ú) said yesterday.
Liao, leader of the talent-hunting delegation, said that a total of 37 domestic leading manufacturers and research institutions, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (¥x¿n¹q) and the Biotechnology Development Center, have joined the delegation to recruit management and high-technology talent.
The delegation is hoping to recruit around 2,000 experts to work in Taiwan, according to Liao.
In addition to holding interviews with applicants from various famous schools in the Los Angeles area, the delegation members also handed out a variety of pamphlets and encouraged those wishing to join Taiwanese high-tech firms and research institutions to sign up through the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Web site.
Liao said that a total of 599 high-tech experts were recruited to work in Taiwan in 2003 and that the figure increased to 656 last year.
He said that the delegation might be able to recruit at least 700 this year to work for Taiwanese high-tech companies and help upgrade Taiwan's international competitiveness.
The delegation will continue its talent-hunting trip to San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver and Tokyo. It has already visited San Diego.
