Retail handset market faces shake-up

COMPETITION Cheap cellphones imported from China could start flooding the market as soon as next month, forcing local players to review their pricing strategies

Rock Hsu (許勝雄), chairman of Vibo Telecom Inc (威寶電信), welcomed the new policy, saying that the company plans to introduce China-made mid-range and lower-priced phones when Vibo launches its 3G services in October.

He said that the company is currently testing the quality of the handsets manufactured by Chinese producers, so that consumers can make better informed choices on reasonably priced phone units.
