China tries to rein in rampant online copyright piracy

AFP , BEIJING

New regulations will take effect in China this month that will for the first time make it possible to punish rampant violations of intellectual property rights on the Internet, Chinese media reports said yesterday.

The new rules make Internet Service Providers (ISPs) responsible for removing content that violates other people's copyright, threatening them with fines of up to 100,000 yuan (US$12,000), the China Daily reported.

"China's present copyright laws haven't defined the responsibilities clearly to the ISPs," said Li Guobin, an official with the Ministry of Information Industry in Beijing.

"That's why we introduce the new regulations," Li said.
