The increase in retail prices of gasoline and diesel in Indonesia is aimed at cutting the high cost of subsidizing domestic consumption and freeing more oil for export. Gasoline now costs US$0.75 a gallon in Indonesia, while diesel costs US$0.68. Last year, the US$6.8 billion subsidies absorbed one-seventh of all government spending.
