Looking forward to the Lunar New Year holiday but don't know what to do? Indulging in the dazzling virtual world by logging on to gaming sites may be a good option besides gorging and watching cloying New Year's special TV shows.
Expecting the traffic to peak in Lunar New Year and the winter break, online gaming companies are set to offer new games during the period to feed customers' appetite, ranging from the mainstream "massive multiplayer" online role-playing games, casual games such as mah-jongg, poker, chess, sports games, to a variety of puzzle games.
"We will introduce new games by the holiday to stimulate the gloomy gaming market that persisted throughout last year," said Jane Hsu (
Heavyweight games set to hit the market include EverQuest II, a money-making product of Sony Online Entertainment Inc that Gamania formed an alliance with, and San Ma Do developed by Gamania, Hsu said.
Gamania's signature game is the Lineage series, which has accumulated 4 million members with 160,000 players online in real time. Hsu said the company expects traffic of the game to continue rise during the Lunar New Year holidays.
The nation's largest online game provider, Soft-World International Corp (
Ragnarok Online has attracted 3 million members with 310,000 players online at a time, and Wang said the company hopes to draw a similar number of subscribers to RF Online.
To stir the gaming market -- which has been sluggish since the second half of last year -- Soft-World also released new editions to its games including Jin Yung Online II, Swordman Online, Flame Dragon Online and Twin Heroes Online.
The major reason for the stagnation is the lack of new game titles, so Soft-World will introduce a total of five brand new games such as Legend of Three Kingdoms Online this year, Wang said.
Role-playing games, which create social interaction between gamers with different levels and virtual treasures, will still lead the market this year, she said.
The growth of the online game market in Taiwan, however, is slowing down as the market approaches saturation. This has forced local game developers -- including Soft-World, Gamania, Softstar Entertainment Inc (
With its similar culture and language background as well as its mushrooming number of gamers, China has become a critical gaming market in recent years. But as the Chinese authorities tend to protect their own game developers with licensing requirements and stricter requirements for foreign companies, Taiwanese companies are closing their operations in China and have Chinese partners distribute their games instead.
"The high threshold, as well as charges that are about 40 percent lower than those in Taiwan, force us to change our marketing strategy to reduce costs," said Wang Chin-po (
For example, Soft-World, which entered China about 11 years ago, is considering issuing a copy of its self-produced game Jin Yung Online II to a Chinese company, Wang said.
Through such cross-strait partnership, Chinese games are also expected to be introduced to Taiwan gamers.
The first Chinese game to enter Taiwan is Swordman Online developed by Kingsoft Co (金山軟件) and distributed by Soft-World. The game currently draws about 20,000 players online at the same time, despite becoming a fee-based game in November last year, Soft-World said.
Softstar also worked with a Pixel Game (
With above-average quality and lower royalties than South Korean games, there will be more Chinese game titles in the local market, Wang said.
In addition to China, Taiwanese companies are also targeting markets in Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and Southeast Asia. But to make Taiwan a significant exporter of PC online games, game companies will need to increase their made-in-Taiwan titles.
Stephen Garrett, a 27-year-old graduate student, always thought he would study in China, but first the country’s restrictive COVID-19 policies made it nearly impossible and now he has other concerns. The cost is one deterrent, but Garrett is more worried about restrictions on academic freedom and the personal risk of being stranded in China. He is not alone. Only about 700 American students are studying at Chinese universities, down from a peak of nearly 25,000 a decade ago, while there are nearly 300,000 Chinese students at US schools. Some young Americans are discouraged from investing their time in China by what they see

New apartments in Taiwan’s major cities are getting smaller, while old apartments are increasingly occupied by older people, many of whom live alone, government data showed. The phenomenon has to do with sharpening unaffordable property prices and an aging population, property brokers said. Apartments with one bedroom that are two years old or older have gained a noticeable presence in the nation’s six special municipalities as well as Hsinchu county and city in the past five years, Evertrust Rehouse Co (永慶房產集團) found, citing data from the government’s real-price transaction platform. In Taipei, apartments with one bedroom accounted for 19 percent of deals last
