Smuggled food poses health threat

CROSS-STRAIT TRADE Checks on Chinese dried foodstuffs smuggled into Kinmen show higher levels of chemicals and preservatives, a consumer group says

As tourists are only allowed to bring dried foodstuffs back to Taiwan from Kinmen, the foundation expressed worries that the circulation of contaminated produce here could go ignored.

"We call on the government to step up examinations of these products sold in Kinmen, and apply simplified customs procedures there to avoid smuggling," Lee said.

To fix the problem, the Control Yuan is slated to convene a meeting today with the Coast Guard Administration, the Council of Agriculture, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of the Interior, the Department of Health and the county chiefs of Kinmen and Matsu.
