Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by nearly 5 to 4 on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 2.18 billion shares, compared with 2.28 billion on Thursday.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies was up 2.16, or 0.36 percent, at 604.29.
