Dollar hits record low against euro

DEALERS FRETTING Fears that overseas investors might lose confidence in the debt-ridden US economy could further depress the dollar, dampening growth globally

On Jan. 4, 1999, its first day of trading, the euro changed hand for between US$1.1745 and US$1.1812.

It made its debut in the form of banknotes and coins on Jan. 1, 2002, and fell to an historic low of US$0.8230 on Oct. 26, 2002.

On Friday, the euro was changing hands at US$1.2941 from US$1.2874 on Thursday in New York, ¥136.63 (¥136.42), £0.6979 (£0.6978) and 1.5271 Swiss francs (SF1.5286). The dollar stood at ¥105.58 (¥105.94) and SF1.1801 (SF1.1874).

The pound was at US$1.8451 (US$1.8441), ¥195.74 (¥195.47) and SF2.1878 (SF2.1901).

On the London Bullion Market, the price of an ounce of gold stood at US$421 against US$430.50 late on Thursday.
