Declining issues outnumbered advancers by about 9 to 5 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 1.47 billion shares, compared with 1.67 billion on Thursday.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies was down 8.89, or 1.5 percent, at 567.77.
