Advancing issues barely outnumbered decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where consolidated volume came to 1.75 billion shares, compared with 1.43 billion on Thursday.
The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies was down 1.37, or 0.2 percent, at 573.17.
